Midterm Writing Test revised

District 9
By Sarah Deschênes
The work is given to Mr. F.J. Bonkowski
For the class of English 102b-01
Cégep of Saint-Laurent – October 7th, 2010

Last week, we’ve been talking in groups about a movie that we saw. (16) My movie was called: District 9. This movie is classified as a science-fiction aliens war’s movie. The story of this film is kind of hard to understand because there’s a lot of politics in this film. It’s the story of Wikus Van de Merwe, a guy who works for the MNU, a government institution that works on the alien problem. Because Wikus is dating the daughter of his boss, he got a better job and he started to work on the field. It is at this point that we really see the special effects, examples:  the aliens or explosion or even alien’s gun (that are really stronger than our guns). On the field, Wikus got infected by a liquid that make him transformed into an alien. The rest of the story explains how Wikus tries to return to his first form, a human. He got friendly with an alien and started to understand their situation. At the end of the film, he doesn’t have the choice to understand it, he need to understand it.

I read a text about this film, it was called: “District 9”: Neill Blomkamp and Sharlto Copley are the ones to watch. This text was a review from Mark Farnsworth that I found in Internet. Farnsworth says in his review that District 9 is one of the best movies of the decade in its category. He says that the special effects are so good, so real, that he forgot it was only a movie. He really thought that there was an alien mothership in the sky of Johannesburg and that the aliens were really living in a ghetto called District 9. His opinion is that none of the parts were bad and he recommended to everyone to watch this movie. I remember that Farnsworth said that the producer, Neill Blomkamp, is a good one and that everyone should watch for his next films, they’re going to be great ones.

The second text that I read was called: District 9 (Neill Blomkamp 2009). This text has been written by Eric Mahleb. His opinion is a little bit different from the opinion of Farnsworth up there. He says that District 9 isn’t a major film in the categorie of science-fiction. Mahleb’s opinion is that it looks a little bit like an amator movie. There was a part of the story that isn’t “realistic”. One of those is that the liquid that Wikus got infected with is the gaz for Christopher’s spaceship, Wikus’alien friend. Mahleb says that it’s not as realistic as the rest of the movie. There is one thing that the author of the review loved about District 9, it’s that the producer succeeded to create such great special effects with such a low budget. It cost 30 millions to produce this film and a lot of movies cost a lot more for the same level of special effects. He recommended the film to science-fiction lovers, not to for people who don’t appreciate science-fiction movie enough.

My appreciation of this movie is simple, I really liked it. There was enough action to make the story actually interesting and the science-fiction special effects were really impressing. I was surprised to love this movie because usually, I don’t love those kinds of movie. But the actors, even the aliens, had real emotions, I was able to see the sadness in Christopher’s eyes when he saw his friend dead. I also appreciated the fact that they used the mystery of a secret zone of the government where they were praticing some experiences on aliens. Even if the end was predictable, the movie is really great and I recommend this film to people like me who like films with action, politics and sentimal parts.

New courses means...... NEW PEOPLE!

I'm the only one in my english class that is in the leisure program and for the first class, the teacher asked us to do an interesting thing. He asked us to interview someone we didn't know, that means everybody for me, and to write a text about this person on our blog. Teachers used to ask students to write about them, not about other people and that's how I met Esther Mutombo.
Basically, Esther seems like an ordinary student but she's not, she has her unique life story. Esther is studying her second year of a D.E.C. in humain sciences at Cégep of Saint-Laurent. First thing I realize about her, is that she's really kind and maybe a little bit shy, but Esther is a really good person. Her family and her comes from Africa, actually, from Congo. Her parents, brother and sister live with her in Montréal but the rest of her family is still lliving in Congo. Eight years had pass from the day she first came here, but she never returned there to see her family. Esther told me that one of her goal is to go in South Africa to discover this country and how people live there. Maybe she could go see her family during this trip? That could be a possibility.

She should now talk about future. With her diploma, Esther aspires to become an embassador for Canada in an other country and she wants to travel a lot everywhere. That's why she wants to go at the University of Ottawa, because her diploma is going to be good everywhere if she go there.
She wants to study a lot, but Esther has a lot of favorites activities when it's time to have fun. She love to play soccer and basketball with her brother and sister. She really loves volleyball too, even if she's not in the school's team. She loves music like R&B, pop and.... Gospel! Yes, gospel, even if she had never seen a gospel mass. But she's been singing in her church's choirs for fives years. That's a common point, I've sang in a choirs too, many years ago.
Another thing about Esther, is that, like every students in the school, she's really proud of her last session in cegep. Because, even if she had difficulties, she'd pass all her courses.
That's Esther Mutombo, the girl that i've met in my english class. Maybe a friend in become or only a kind girl in my thursday morning english class.
